Schools closed Tuesday in Darien, area, with show predicted

A winter weather advisory is in effect for Darien and the surrounding area Tuesday. Darien and most of its school neighbors closed their schools Tuesday night in anticipation of the snow which is predicted to begin mid-morning. The advisory is in effect until 6 a.m. and includes southern Connecticut, northeastern New Jersey and portions of the lower Hudson valley.

Mixed precipitation expected. Total snow and sleet accumulations of 3 to 5 inches and ice accumulations of one to two tenths of an inch expected. Highest snow, sleet and ice accumulations across interior.

The weather could result in slippery road conditions and could impact the evening commute. A winter weather advisory means that periods of snow, sleet or freezing rain will cause travel difficulties. Drivers could experience slippery roads and limited visibilities and should use caution while driving.

Snow before noon, then snow and sleet between noon and 4pm, then freezing rain and sleet after 4pm. High near 34. Wind chill values between 20 and 25. East wind 11 to 17 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. Little or no ice accumulation expected. Total daytime snow and sleet accumulation of 2 to 4 inches possible.
Tuesday night
Freezing rain and sleet before 8pm, then rain and sleet between 8pm and 10pm, then rain after 10pm. Temperature rising to around 38 by 4am. Wind chill values between 20 and 30. East wind 13 to 18 mph becoming northwest 6 to 11 mph after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 28 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. Little or no ice accumulation expected. New sleet accumulation of less than one inch possible.

A 30 percent chance of rain, mainly before 7am. Cloudy, then gradually becoming mostly sunny, with a steady temperature around 39. Wind chill values between 30 and 35. Breezy, with a west wind 9 to 14 mph increasing to 15 to 20 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 33 mph.
